Video - Do you know your watershed? Learning about the Red Deer River. Presentation by Joey Temple

Joey Temple shows what watershed education looks like in the Red Deer River watershed. The Red Deer River Watershed Alliance targets youth as well as adults in its watershed education. Watershed education is more than just water. Joey Temple describes the subwatersheds of the Red Deer River and some of the challenges in each. The relationships of urban runoff and wastewater treatment and the rural impacts on riparian shorelines, septic field runoff and manure spreading and runoff  are issues the RDRWA discusses with students. The curriculum discusses wetland loss as farmers drain sloughs to improve field efficiency and irrigation withdrawals and return flows. There is also education around forestry and oil and gas practices.

Joey Temple is an Outreach Coordinator with the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance. Her presentation was part of the CWRA/WPAC Joint Conference, March 13-14, 2013, Red Deer, Alberta.
