One with Nature: A Renewed Approach to Land and Freshwater Conservation in Canada was released earlier this month, highlighting some of the necessary elements for improving and expanding the nation’s parks and protected area systems at the federal, provincial and territorial levels. This report provides strategies to achieve the Canada Target 1 goal of protecting at least 17% of terrestrial and inland waters by 2020 via a network of protected area and other effective area-based conservation measures. Four collective priorities for all jurisdictions were emphasized in the report, including:
1. Expansion of protected area networks at the federal, provincial and territorial levels.
2. Greater recognition and support for existing Indigenous rights, responsibilities and priorities.
3. Maximizing conservation outcomes.
4. Building support and participation for conservation with a broader community.
