At the 2012 Alberta Soil Science Workshop, Bin Xu of the University of Calgary Department of Geography presented findings from a three-year study looking at the effect of nitrogen on peatland bogs. Nitrogen levels in the atmosphere are increased through oil and gas activity, and the study simulated this increase in nitrogen levels to determine how boreal bogs respond to increased nitrogen levels.
