After the floods of 2005 in southern Alberta, a committee was struck to look at and report on ways that the province of Alberta could mitigate future floods. In November 2006 the report was submitted.
The committee, led by George Groenveld (then the MLA for Highwood), developed a draft mitigation strategy, including the following elements:
- Ensuring resources are available to enable effective decision-making
- Municipal support in the form of guidelines, regulations and programs to limit growth in flood-prone areas
- Providing technical expertise to municipalities
