Janelle Villeneuve reports on a 6 year project to evaluate the environmental and economic performance of agricultural BMPs to improve water quality on small watercourses in Alberta. Her presentation reviews watersheds, sites and the monitoring protocols before and after BMPs were implemented. Livestock BMPs were easier to implement than manure-nutrient BMPs. The study gives more clarity for planners and policy makers in selecting projects that are more likely to improve stewardship of Alberta's agricultural watersheds.
Janelle Villeneuve is a water quality specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. Her presentation was part of the CWRA/WPAC Joint Conference, Red Deer, Alberta, March 13-14, 2013.
