Dr. Les Gammie provides a summary of the North Saskatchewan River Basin, the primary water source for Edmonton, Alberta's capital city and the industrial heartland for Alberta's petrochemical industry. As a non-government body, the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NWSA) has the responsibility of producing state of the watershed reports and watershed plans for the North Saskatchewan River from its source in the Rocky Mountains to the Saskatchewan border. Since its plans are advisory not regulatory, the NSWA has led the way in developing a consultative and science based process with the municipal and industry partners whose activities implement the watershed management plan. Dr. Gammie covers lessons learned in this process and what is proposed in implementing the watershed management plan. The NSWA has some important lessons for other WPACs, municipalities and watershed planners.
Dr. Les Gammie, President of the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance, made his presentation at the CWRA/WPAC Joint Conference at Red Deer, Alberta, March 14, 2013.
