The Protecting Alberta's Environment Act introduced today in the Alberta Legislature will create the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency (AEMERA). This arms-length agency will be responsible for province-wide environmental monitoring, although initially its focus will be on the oilsands area of the province. An agency chair will be appointed once the bill passes, and AEMERA should begin operating in early 2014.
