Biodiversity safeguards against natural disaster, study finds

A new study published this week online in Nature indicates that ecosystems with a low level of diversity are less able to survive natural disturbances like fire. As explained in this CBC News report, the study looked at how human-developed pastureland responded to fire; the non-native grasses were unable to recover from the fire, and there weren't enough native plants to regenerate the area as pasture.
