The plan to reintroduce bison to Banff National Park continues to be developed, although there are many challenges involved. This Edmonton Journal article describes the planning process currently underway, and some of the decisions being made about how to start the process. Bison roamed freely in the Banff area until the mid-1800s. The reintroduction will begin with a small herd of young animals, with the ultimate goal of having roughly 600-1000 bison in the area.
