White pine blister rust is killing many of the whitebark pine trees in the Jasper area. As this article from the Jasper Fitzhugh newspaper reports, recent surveys of some stands show that most trees are infected. Whitebark pine trees are important for wildlife survival, from squirrels to grizzly bears, and they are considered endangered under the Species at Risk Act.
