Fall count reflects thriving elk population in Banff

The number of elk in Banff National Park indicates that the herd is likely growing, according to the fall census recently completed there. As reported in the Calgary Herald, Banff National Park staff did a 2-day count of elk in the Banff and Lake Louise areas of the park, and found that numbers are similar to last year, with a higher percentage of calves this year - indicating that the herd is probably expanding. Indications are that the elk management strategy that has been in place for the past few years will continue.
