Fraction of birds die after landing in tailings ponds

A new report from a University of Alberta biologist indicates that deterrents to keep birds off tailings ponds are not completely effective. As this Calgary Herald article indicates, although thousands of birds land on the tailings ponds annually, only a small fraction of those die as a result. The study's author suggests that more research is required to determine the effects of even short periods of time spent on the tailings ponds.
