The scientific director for Alberta Water Research Institute suggests that tailings pond recovery could be sped up, improving Alberta's image abroad, with an increase in funding. According to this Edmonton Journal article, Alexander Zehnder, speaking to the Canadian Club of Edmonton, proposed that research into fnding better solutions to address tailings pond and water recovery efforts in the oil sands could be achieved much more quickly if industry would provide a good portion of the funding required.
