German scientists quit oilsands research over heated public climate concerns

Research on bitumen upgrading will no longer be part of the Helmholtz-Alberta Initiative, a research partnership between the University of Alberta and Germany's Helmholtz Association. As explained in this Edmonton Journal article, the decision was made because of concerns in Germany about the environmentally unsustainable nature of oilsands production.  Other aspects of the Helmholtz-Alberta Initiative will continue, including research related to reclamation and infectious disease control.
