Mercury levels rising near Alberta oil sands, study finds

A study from Environment Canada's Join Oil Sands Monitoring program shows that trace levels of mercury are on the rise downstream of oil sands sites. Most levels tested below the threshold of what is considered dangerous, but some samples did test higher. This Globe and Mail article explains that the cause of the rising levels was not identified in the study, and that more research would be required to pinpoint the source as mercury can enter an environment in different ways.
