No charges will be laid against either Syncrude or Suncor for the deaths of hundreds of birds on tailings ponds in the oilsands region two years ago. As reported in the Calgary Herald, prosecutors have elected not to proceed with charges, based in part on a research study that showed the companies could not have prevented the deaths. The report, by the University of Alberta's Colleen Cassady St. Clair, also includes recommendations for how companies could avoid similar incidents in future.
