In a few weeks Syncrude will begin the long-term process of trying to convert a large tailings pond (Base Mine Lake) into a clean lake. As explained in this Edmonton Journal article, the process is one Syncrude has used in small scale test ponds, using a technique under development for the past 25 years. The government has approved Syncrude's monitoring program for the next decade as the process is underway.
