Legislation to be introduced this fall that prevents development in flood-prone areas will have exemptions for the communities of Drumheller and Fort McMurray. The exemptions will be given because both communities have developed on their floodway for many years, as explained in this Edmonton Journal article. Drumheller and Fort McMurray will be responsible for ensuring that they have plans to protect themselves from once-in-100-year flooding.
