As bitumen continues to leak through cracks in the Cold Lake region, Alberta Environment & Sustainable Resource Development has issued an order to CNRL to find the source of the problem. As reported by the Edmonton Journal, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. has been ordered to locate the root cause of the leak, clean up the surface of the land, and test for groundwater contamination. The leak was first reported in May. So far there is no evidence of groundwater contamination, but the monitoring is precautionary.
