Ongoing research in northeastern Alberta is helping to shed light on the health of caribou herds in the area. As explained by this Edmonton Journal article, the research using scat-sniffing dogs is helping Statoil monitor the caribou herds near its oilsands operations. The study was led by Dr. Sam Wasser in 2006, 2007 and 2009, and he will be working on a follow-up study this winter. Statoil has been using another monitoring program to collect data on local wildlife, as well as a lichen propogation program.
