Study for Shell's Jackpine oilsands mine predicts big losses in animal habitat

In an environmental assessment of the proposed Jackpine mine expansion plan, Shell Canada indicates that wildlife habitat will be lost. As explained in this Edmonton Journal article, the assessment shows that development in the area - which includes developments other than just the Jackpine mine - could reduce wildlife habitat by 40-60 percent for some species. Shell has plans for mitigation and restoration, but opponents say the cumulative impacts are just too severe.
