Research from the University of Lethbridge indicates that the Athabasca River has reduced levels of several key fish species, with numbers falling dramatically in the past 40 years. Arctic grayling, mountain whitefush and long nose suckers are some of the species studied, along with walleye and northern pike. The study suggests that several factors have combined to lead to the decline in numbers. More details of the study can be found in this Edmonton Journal article.
