Taxpayers on hook for billion-dollar cleanup of toxic Giant Mine

The costs of cleaning up the Gian Mine site near Yellowknife could increase to upwards of $1-billion. As reported by the Calgary Herald, the cleanup of the toxic buildings, tailings ponds and underground arsenic storage will be be lengthy, and costs continue to rise.  The remediation of the site is funded by a federal program for dealing with contaminated sites, which allotted $3.6 billion to clean up over 2700 contaminated sites across the country.
