After the deaths of 19 firefighters battling a wildfire in Arizona this week, questions have come up regarding the emergency fire shelters those firefighters had with them. As the CBC News reports, the shelters - individual heat-resistent/reflecting tents - haven't been used anywhere in Canada since 2005. Although they are said to have saved the lives of many wildfire-fighters in the US, the techniques used for fighting fires are different in Canada. With much of the firefighting being done in densely forested areas, for example, there would be no appropriate place to deploy the shelters.
