Young pine trees face new peril

Research from the University of Alberta's Department of Renewable Resources indicates that the next generation of pine forest could be more at risk for insect attack after a mountain pine beetle attack on the mature trees. As this UAlberta News article explains, the mountain pine beetle attack leads to changes in the fungi in the soil, which affects the new trees that grow there. Results indicate that fewer seedlings established in these sites, and they contained fewer defense chemicals.
