Video - Municipal Planning & the Roles of Watershed Management Plans

Bill Shaw discusses how integrated watershed management plans are implemented in Alberta through municipal development plans and bylaws. Land-use planning determines water management outcomes. The public expectation that municipal plans are guided by the recommendations made in watershed management plans need to be moderated by the reality that environment and economic considerations are only part of a municipality's development plans. WPACs have a role in assisting the public in understanding that municipal plans will not always conform to watershed plans.

Bill Shaw is a community planning consultant with BPS Consulting Ltd. He has been involved in municipal planning and watershed and lake management issues in the Red Deer River basin since the 1970's. His presentation was part of the CWRA/WPAC Joint Conference, March 13-14, 2013, Red Deer, Alberta.
