In the midst of the Calgary flood, Minister Diana McQueen summarized Alberta's water initiatives ongoing in 2013 at the Canadian Water Summit, June 27, 2013. She discussed the flood recovery efforts in southern Alberta. Minister McQueen talked about the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan and challenges of water and growth in southern Alberta. This spring, Water Conversations, Alberta's community consultations on water covered four themes: healthy lakes, hydraulic fracturing, water and wastewater treatment and water management. She pointed out the importance of regional systems and regional expertise and the achievements of irrigation districts in water conservation.
The Albert Water Council's third report on water conservation emphasizes voluntary planning by key water users in achieving water conservation. She stressed the partnerships needed by Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development for integrated resource management. Minister McQueen concludes by describing Alberta's new approach to environmental monitoring and an information portal for reporting monitoring results.
