Roger Bryan, Environment Program Specialist for Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, discusses life cycle assessment as a tool for agriculture commodities.
The Life Cycle Assessment Tool has been in development for about three years and it uses the life cycle approach to assess the primary production level sustainability for canola, potatoes, chickens and eggs in Alberta. The objectives include understanding, developing and applying environmental footprints to primary agriculture commodities to have a comprehensive understanding of the impact of agriculture on the environment. Other objectives include developing data inventories for the prairie region and applying processes and methodologies that are nationally and internationally recognized.
Bryan explains that clearly defined boundaries, scope and assumptions are required, as well as a high level of technical knowledge, to gain success in developing this tool.
This presentation was a part of the Alberta Soil Science Workshop, in Calgary from February 12-14th, 2014.
