Brian Amiro and Karen Wittenberg, both professors at the University of Manitoba, are discussing climate change and its expected impacts on agriculture in the prairies. They discuss the importance of adapting to change creatively. There are several metrics that should be considered, when adaptation is being implemented. These include: time, comprehensiveness, simplicity and the ability to implement it locally. By doing so, one can ensure improvements can be verified and measured.
The government has the necessary tools to implement change. This is often done through policies and plans implemented through legislation and regulations, incentives or directives, education and outreach programs. What does successful innovation look like? Multi-sectoral collaboration, sharing of knowledge, and the flexibility to adapt and integrate at the local level. Education is also vital in preparing individuals to think creatively and achieve success. Considering its importance, it must be used to create analytical and critical thinkers, visionary and ethical leaders.
