Harry Harker, manager of Alberta & Prairies CitySpaces Consulting Ltd, talks about the wisdom he has gained over forty years as a Manager of Planning, and then a Director of Planning. He focuses his talk on the importance of developing relationships to advance your career.
He recommends planners ask themselves important questions like: “Do I have a rapport with the right people?” And “What are my staff capabilities?” He discusses the importance of actively developing relationships with staff, developers, and the media in order to excel in your career. He advises that planners find a balance between being open and engaging with the public, and protecting one’s staff; it is important to encourage the public to ask questions, but also ensure they are not disrespectful to staff at the front desk. Pursue professional relationships with developers, since discussions over coffee can become discussions while playing golf, and these relationships can help get projects off the ground.
This presentation was a part of the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) Annual Conference, Lifecycle of a Planner, from October of 2014.
