At the Alberta Soil Science Workshop 2012, one of the plenary session presentations was from Jim Schieck of Alberta Innovates Technology Futures/Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute. His presentation, entitled "Measuring ecosystem health at multiple scales: Compatible metrics for reclaimed sites and regional assessments" focused on the process used by ABMI for surveying the ecological health of sites across the province, including information on how ABMI tracks numbers of birds, mammals, plants and insects. The results can then be used to better understand the relationships between species, overall health of a previosuly disturbed site, and to predict what could happen in the future.
