At the PTAC Resource Access & Ecological Issues Forum on November 26, 2012, Rick Bonar introduced the panel discussion on caribou recovery. Bonar, President of the Foothills Research Institute, summarizes what we know about caribou and where we need to go.
There is a lot we already know, for example, the role of primary prey, white tailed deer, elk and moose in attracting predators (wolves) into caribou ranges. We need evaluate solutions to see if they are really working. Industry can focus on habitat and footprint. Government has to look at populations and human use. Getting to action plans is the target.
