At the 2012 Mountain Pine Beetle Ecology Program workshop, hosted by the Foothills Research Institute, Soung Ryu discussed some ongoing research being done by the University of Alberta related to preparing sites for regeneration. Because the scale of the mountain pine beetle attack is so large, commercial harvesting will be unlikely to keep up with clearing the dead trees. Regeneration of the forested areas affected will require clearing, and two possible methods will be mechanical site preparation and prescribed burns. This research project aims to test the effecitveness of both these techniques.
