Greg Boorman, project manager for Nature Alberta, gives a general summary about the Living by Water Project. Started thirteen years ago, its main goal is to educate waterfront landowners so they can make better choices about their land management.
Boorman discusses the five aspects of shoreline education covered by the project, and the significance of their two year follow-up with the home owners. To date they have completed 754 consultations at 30 lakes in Alberta. The most significant changes are in the drop in use of pesticides and fertilizers, and the increase in use of phosphate-free soaps.
For the future, they are interested in collaborating with WPACS to extend the reach of the program. This presentation was a part of the Alberta’s WPAC Summit in October of 2014, entitled Water Summit in the Valley: Innovation and Leadership in Sustainable Water Management; hosted by the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance.
