Part 1 of 3
John Pomeroy is the Canadian Research Chair in Water Resources and Climate Change at the Center for Hydrology for the University of Saskatchewan. In this presentation he discusses the prairie hydrological cycle and explains the influence of temperature, soil composition and significant evapotranspiration.
He discusses the prairie runoff process; blowing snow, spring melt and runoff, dry areas, and water storage in wetlands. Since physically-based hydrological computer simulations can inform our understanding of soil water and hydrological relationships, the Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling Platform was created as a way to assemble models so the modelling can be completed based on the temperate climate of the prairies. It has modules based on over 50 years of prairie hydrology research at the University of Saskatchewan. This presentation was a part of the Alberta Soil Science Workshop, February 2015.
