Video - Hydraulic modelling for urban flood mapping on Elbow River. Presentation by Patrick Delaney & Peter Onyshko

Patrick Delaney, DHI, and Peter Onyshko, Alberta ESRD, discuss the 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling done for urban flood mapping on the Elbow River and City of Calgary.

They discuss their most recent project, where they coupled the 1D model with the 2D to make use of the existing HEC-RAS model and cross-sections, and solve for the 2D flow in developed areas where flow directions are uncertain. They discuss model calibration results for the City of Calgary, and modelling the 100 year flood event. From this modelling, they were able to create a flood inundation area map, flooding depth map, and flooding velocities map.

This presentation was a part of the Canadian Water Resources Association, Alberta Branch Conference, in Calgary, Alberta, March of 2014.
