Part 3 of 4
Paul Bedford, adjunct professor of urban & regional planning at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University, talks about the five stages of his career as a City Planner: the early years, learning years, management years, leading, and giving back.
He talks about his leadership years from 1996 to 2004 when he was promoted to Chief Planner for the Old City of Toronto. He defines leadership as taking people to a place they would otherwise not go, and talks about the importance of working without a fear of being fired because it is only then that you can push issues important to you and beneficial to the city.
This presentation was a part of the Alberta Professional Planners Institute Annual Conference, entitled “Lifecycle of a Planner”, in October 2014.
