Part 3 of 3
John Pomeroy is the Canadian Research Chair in Water Resources and Climate Change at the Center for Hydrology for the University of Saskatchewan. In this presentation he discusses the prairie hydrological cycle and explains the influence of temperature, soil composition and significant evapotranspiration.
The Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling Platform was created as a way to assemble models so the modelling can be completed based on the temperate climate of the prairies. He explains spring infiltration and its impact on precipitation, mean air temperature, volumetric soil moisture, and vegetation height. As well, he discusses the relationship between drought, soil moisture and evaporation - which is impacted by the amount of water storage (open water and underground), seasonality, and episodic events.
Beneficial Management Practices can be used to adjust the impact of soil moisture on hydrology but there remains uncertainty regarding their effectiveness and interactions for runoff generation. This presentation was a part of the Alberta Soil Science Workshop, February 2015.
