Lorne Fitch, provincial riparian specialist for Alberta Cows and Fish, talks about what he has learned about cumulative effects and shifting benchmarks as it pertains to fish populations and the overall health of the landscape in Alberta.
In explaining the change in fish populations and river health over the last one hundred years, he argues that we are creating a landscape that is “warmer, dirtier, simpler, and fragmented”. He warns that if we don’t understand how things were in the past, we have no context to understand how things are today, and make wise decisions for the future.
