George Roman from The City of Calgary Water Resources talks about a project conducted for The City of Calgary on riparian mapping and its’ relationship to floodplains.
This report was completed for the City of Calgary in 2013, to be used as a strategic catalyst to support riparian land management, conservation and land management in Calgary.
The report was based on research that included statistics, based on field data, used to define the locations of the inner, middle, outer and outermost riparian zones. Calgary Environmental Reserve setback modelling was done, including base setback type and modifications based on slope. Research was also focused on mapping lost riparian areas in the city.
Roman defined, and made suggestions about, conservation, restoration, recreation, flood and erosion control and developed land. Post-flooding assessment was also executed, and it was concluded that most of the identified areas requiring restoration showed extensive bank erosion, while conservation zones mainly remained intact because healthy riparian areas are resilient to flooding.
This presentation was a part of the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) for the Alberta Branch Conference, in Calgary, Alberta in March, 2014.
