Video - Storage and transport of saline water for use in hydraulic fracturing. Presentation by Ian Mitchell

Ian Mitchell is Risk Assessment Discipline Lead and Geoscience and Risk Practice Area Lead, Millenium EMS Solutions Ltd.
He describes a preliminary study on the surface storage and transportation of saline water. The study is to explore the possibility and risks of storing and transporting treated saline water for hydraulic fracturing, in place of fresh groundwater.

This study focused on the Pipestone and Gordondale areas of Alberta. The aim of the study was to determine the process for proactive water management planning and environmental risks with saline water. This included liability assessment for the storage and transportation of saline water, and a groundwater quality review.

As a preliminary study, the study focused on a regulatory review and a liability assessment for various environmental risk scenarios. Next steps of the project are discussed.

Ian Mitchell's presentation was part of PTAC's Water Forum, June 11, 2013 in Calgary, Alberta.
