Brad Hayes describes an Alberta oil and gas industry collaboration to define water resources in west central Alberta. Normally a government responsibility, industry is taking the lead to compile, review and synthesize the data for saline groundwater, fresh groundwater and surface water. With this information, the oil and gas industry, government regulators and other stakeholders can make informed decisions about the options and potential impacts of water use by the oil and gas industry before unconventional oil and gas development begins in this region. Led by PTAC, this is resource assessment work benefits all resource managers including farmers and ranchers in west central Alberta.
