Leah Kongsrude describes the process of monitoring and analyzing the impact of stormwater discharge from the City of St. Albert, population 60,000, on the Sturgeon River, a tributary to the North Saskatchewan River in central Alberta. Determining the variety of contaminants to monitor and selecting monitoring sites is described for urban managers with limited budgets. Building the story over time has been a successful strategy for St. Albert. Agricultural areas and the city both have impacts on Sturgeon River. City of St. Albert has the objective of maintaining the water quality of the Sturgeon River as it travels through the city.
Leah Kongsrude is the Environmental Manager, City of St. Albert, Alberta, Canada. Her presentation was part of the CWRA/WPAC Joint Conference, Red Deer, Alberta, May 13-16, 2013.
