Young pine trees face risks from pine beetle

Research from the University of Alberta's Department of Renewable Resources indicates that the next generation of pine forest could be more at risk for insect attack after a mountain pine beetle attack on the mature trees.

Senate report on bee health released

The Senate's agriculture and forestry committee has released its report into the death of bee colonies across Canada. The committee has spent two years investigating the issue of why colinies have been dying off - whether related to neonoctinoid pesticide use, or other causes.

Provincewide fire ban in effect

The Alberta Government took the rare step of issuing a province wide fire ban starting May 25, 2015. The fire ban means all open fires, including campfires, are prohibited across all of Alberta's Forest Protection Area. The fire ban is in place due to the extreme risk of wildfire.

Mapping Shared Spaces

A project being led by a researcher from the University of California - Berkley will map the GPS locations of grizzly bears in the Kananaskis area. The bears are fitted with GPS collars and points will be recorded every 20 minutes.
